The method

How the calculator works

The calculator uses the percent-of-body-weight method that UK raw brands such as Natures Menu, Nutriment and Durham Animal Feeds print on their feeding guides. It is a starting point, not a prescription.

Weigh your dog every 2 weeks and adjust by about 10 percent if they are gaining or losing. The daily total is then split by the model you choose.

The bowl, line by line

What each line in the breakdown means

Five ingredients, one balanced bowl. Run the calculator above for the gram amount of each for your dog.

  • 80%

    Muscle meat

Boneless meat including heart, tripe, gizzards, tongue and lung. Heart counts as muscle, not organ.

  • 10%

    Raw edible bone

The bone content only. Chicken wings are about 45% bone, so 50 g of bone is about 110 g of wings. The calculator lists 8 common raw meaty bones.

  • 5%

    Liver

Always 5 percent on its own because of its vitamin A content. Too much causes loose stools.

  • 5%

    Other secreting organs

Kidney, spleen, pancreas, brain, testicles. Not heart, not lung, not tripe.

  • +10%

    Veg, fruit and seeds

BARF only: blended or lightly steamed so the dog can digest them. Drops muscle meat to 70%.

Honest expectations

What raw feeding does and does not change

Raw diets are about 70 percent water by weight, against roughly 10 percent for dry kibble, so the portions look large but the dry matter is similar. Owners most often report 3 changes within the first month:

  1. Smaller, firmer stools

because there is less indigestible filler.

  2. Less drinking from the bowl

because the food carries its own water.

  3. Longer meal times

when raw meaty bones are fed, which is where most of the dental benefit comes from.

Raw feeding is not a treatment for any condition and the calculator does not claim otherwise. The 3 real risks are bacterial contamination (handle it like raw chicken for people), bone injuries (never cooked bone, never weight-bearing bones from large animals for strong chewers) and long-term imbalance if the ratios are ignored. Freezing for 3 weeks before feeding reduces parasite risk in wild game and pork. For the evidence on both sides, read is raw dog food good for dogs.

Switching from kibble

Most dogs can move to raw over 7 to 14 days starting with a single bland protein such as chicken or turkey. Our transition guide has a day by day plan. If your dog is a puppy, read the puppy raw feeding guide first, because growth changes both the amount and the calcium balance.

  1. Days 1 to 3

    25% raw

  2. Days 4 to 6

    50% raw

  3. Days 7 to 9

    75% raw

  4. Days 10 to 14

    100% raw

Frequently asked questions

The questions UK owners ask most before their first raw bowl. Can't find yours? Get in touch via the contact page.

How much raw food should I feed my dog?

Most adult dogs eat 2 to 3 percent of their body weight in raw food a day. A 10 kg dog eats 200 to 300 g, a 20 kg dog 400 to 600 g, a 30 kg dog 600 to 900 g. Start at 2.5 percent for a dog with normal activity, then adjust by 10 percent every 2 weeks based on body condition.

How do I calculate raw food for a puppy?

Puppies eat a higher percentage of their current weight: 8 to 10 percent at 2 to 4 months, 6 to 8 percent at 4 to 6 months, 4 to 5 percent at 6 to 9 months and 3 to 4 percent from 9 to 12 months, split over 3 or 4 meals. Pick Puppy in the calculator and set the age in months. Re-check every 2 weeks because the weight changes fast.

Is 80/10/10 the same as 80/10/5/5?

Yes. 80/10/10 means 80 percent muscle meat, 10 percent bone and 10 percent offal. The 10 percent offal is split into 5 percent liver and 5 percent other secreting organs such as kidney, spleen or pancreas. That is why the calculator shows liver as its own line.

How much does raw feeding cost in the UK?

Complete frozen raw from UK brands costs about £4.38 to £8 per kg when bought in bulk, so a 20 kg dog eating 500 g a day costs roughly £65 to £120 a month. DIY raw from plain minces and carcasses is cheaper, about £2.50 to £4.50 per kg. Delivered subscriptions cost more per kg but arrive portioned. Tick "Show cost comparison" in the calculator to see all three for your dog.

Do I need to add vegetables to raw dog food?

Not necessarily. Prey model raw (PMR) feeds no plant matter. BARF adds about 10 percent vegetables, fruit and seeds. Both approaches have been fed for decades. Many UK complete raw products are BARF style with vegetables blended in. See BARF vs PMR for the differences.

Can I mix raw food and kibble?

You can, and some owners feed raw in the morning and kibble at night to manage cost. If you do, scale the raw amount down by the share of the day it covers, for example feed half the calculator result if raw is one of two meals. The budget guide covers part-raw feeding.
