Can dogs eat raw chicken?
Yes. Raw chicken is the most common protein in UK raw feeding, the first one most dogs are switched onto and the cheapest source of edible bone. The questions worth asking are which parts, how much, and how to keep the bacteria off your worktop. Here are the answers.

The short answer
Dogs can eat raw chicken, including the bones. Wings, necks, carcasses and feet give you bone; thighs, breast and mince give you muscle meat; chicken liver and hearts give you organ. Together they can make up most of a balanced 80/10/10 diet, which is why so many UK complete raw products are chicken based and why the transition guide starts with it.
The risk is bacterial, and it is mainly a risk to you. Raw chicken carries Salmonella and Campylobacter whether it is for a dog or a person. Handle it the same way and the risk is manageable.
Which parts of a chicken to feed
| Part | Bone content | Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wings | 45% | Bone | The standard starter bone. Fine for most dogs from 5 kg up. Whole, not chopped, so the dog has to chew. |
| Necks | 36% | Bone | Softer than wings, good for small dogs and puppies. Gulpers can swallow them whole, so supervise or feed semi frozen. |
| Carcass / frame | 45% | Bone | The cheapest bone there is, £1.50 to £2.50 a kg from raw suppliers. Big enough that even large dogs chew. |
| Feet | 60% | Bone | Mostly bone, skin and cartilage. A chew more than a meal. Count the bone share if you feed several. |
| Thighs and drumsticks | 21% | Bone and meat | Close to a complete 80/10 split on their own. Drumstick bones are harder than wing bones, so better for medium and large dogs. |
| Breast | 0% | Muscle meat | Lean. Good for dogs on a diet, poor as the only meat because it is low in fat. |
| Mince (bone in) | Varies, usually 10 to 15% | Meal base | Raw supplier chicken mince often includes ground bone. Check the label. If it says "with bone" you do not need to add wings. |
| Liver and hearts | 0% | Organ and muscle | Liver is the 5 percent liver line. Hearts count as muscle meat, not organ. |
Bone shares are approximate and are the same figures the calculator uses to convert your dog's bone target into a weight of wings or necks.
How much raw chicken to feed
The amount is set by the dog, not the protein: 2 to 3 percent of body weight a day for an adult, as the feeding guide explains. Within that, 10 percent should be edible bone. The table converts the bone target into chicken wings or necks for a dog on 2.5 percent.
| Dog weight | Daily food | Bone target (10%) | As chicken wings | As chicken necks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 kg | 125 g | 13 g | 28 g (about 1) | 35 g |
| 10 kg | 250 g | 25 g | 56 g (about 1) | 69 g |
| 20 kg | 500 g | 50 g | 111 g (about 1) | 139 g |
| 30 kg | 750 g | 75 g | 167 g (about 2) | 208 g |
| 40 kg | 1000 g | 100 g | 222 g (about 2) | 278 g |
A supermarket chicken wing weighs 80 to 100 g, so a 20 kg dog needs roughly one wing a day to hit its bone target, with the rest of the 500 g made up of boneless meat and organ. Feeding a dog nothing but wings puts bone at 45 percent of the diet, which is far too much and shows up as white, crumbly, hard stools.
The bacteria, honestly
Raw chicken is the main source of Campylobacter in UK food poisoning and a common source of Salmonella. The FSA's surveys of retail chicken have found Campylobacter on a meaningful share of packs for years. A dog's stomach is more acidic and its gut transit faster than ours, so most dogs that eat contaminated chicken do not get ill, but they can carry the bacteria and pass it in faeces and saliva for several days.
Three things follow from that.
- Treat the chicken like chicken. Fridge defrosting, a separate board and knife, hands and surfaces washed, bowl lifted and washed after 20 minutes. Never wash the chicken itself.
- Treat the dog as a carrier for a few days. Pick up stools promptly, do not let the dog lick faces, especially children's, and wash hands after handling the dog's mouth or bowl.
- Think harder in some households. Where someone is pregnant, under 5, elderly or immune compromised, the BVA's caution is worth taking seriously, and a lightly cooked or complete product that has been tested is the lower risk choice.
There is one rarer risk worth knowing. A 2018 Australian study found dogs with a sudden onset paralysis called acute polyradiculoneuritis were far more likely to have eaten raw chicken and to carry Campylobacter than healthy dogs. It is uncommon, most dogs recover, and the study shows an association rather than proof. It is a reason for the hygiene routine, not a reason to avoid chicken.
Supermarket chicken or raw supplier chicken?
Either. Supermarket chicken is human grade and convenient but you pay for it: wings at £2.50 to £4 a kg and thighs at £3 to £5. Raw suppliers and pet shop freezers sell chicken carcasses at £1.50 to £2.50 a kg and chicken mince with bone at £2 to £3.50, as costed in the budget guide. Commercial raw pet food in the UK is made under the animal by-product rules, which means the producer is registered and batches are tested for Salmonella. Supermarket chicken is not tested for your dog's purposes, it is simply fresh.

When chicken is the wrong choice
- Suspected chicken allergy. Chicken is among the most reported food allergens in dogs. Switch to a protein the dog has never had and see what happens over 8 weeks.
- Dogs that gulp. A whole wing swallowed can lodge. Use a chicken carcass or a turkey neck that is too big to swallow, feed it partly frozen, or use a mince with ground bone.
- Pancreatitis history. Skinless chicken is lean and usually fine, but skin and wings carry fat. Your vet decides here.
- Very small dogs with tiny mouths. A chicken neck or a single wing tip is a better size than a whole wing.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can dogs eat raw chicken bones?
Yes. Raw chicken bones are soft, bend rather than splinter and are digested by a dog's stomach acid. They are the most common bone source in UK raw feeding. Cooked chicken bones are the dangerous ones: cooking makes them brittle and sharp. Never feed a cooked bone of any kind, which includes the carcass from a roast.
Can dogs eat raw chicken breast?
Yes, but it is lean muscle meat with no bone and no organ, so it is an ingredient rather than a meal. A dog fed only chicken breast would be short of calcium, fat and most vitamins within weeks. Use it as part of the 80 percent muscle meat alongside bone-in pieces and liver, or buy a complete chicken recipe where that is already done.
Can dogs eat raw chicken from the supermarket?
Yes. Supermarket chicken is sold for people to eat and is as clean as chicken gets. Wings, thighs, drumsticks and whole chickens all work. It is usually dearer per kg than a raw supplier's chicken mince or carcasses, but easier to find. Do not wash it: the Food Standards Agency advises against washing raw chicken because splashing spreads Campylobacter around the kitchen.
Can puppies eat raw chicken?
Yes, and chicken wings are the usual first bone for a puppy from about 8 weeks, under supervision. The bone has to be sized so the puppy chews rather than swallows it. The puppy guide covers the amounts by age and the calcium question, which matters more for puppies than for adults.
Will raw chicken give my dog Salmonella?
Dogs can carry Salmonella and Campylobacter from raw chicken, usually without being ill, and shed it in their faeces for days. The risk is mainly to people in the house, especially children, pregnant women, the elderly and anyone immune compromised. Dogs do occasionally get ill, with vomiting and diarrhoea, and a small Australian study linked raw chicken to a rare paralysis called acute polyradiculoneuritis. The handling routine below is what keeps the risk low.
Is chicken a common allergy in dogs?
Chicken is one of the most frequently reported food allergens in dogs, along with beef, dairy and wheat, mostly because it is in almost everything dogs eat. If your dog has itchy skin or ear problems that you suspect are food related, a single protein diet of something they have never eaten (rabbit, venison, duck) for 8 weeks is the test, ideally with your vet. The proteins guide has the options.
