DIY raw: what the ingredients cost
Balancing it yourself is the cheapest route. Typical UK prices from raw suppliers, independent pet shops with a freezer and supermarkets, October 2026:
- Plain chicken or turkey mince (with bone): £2 to £3.50 per kg from raw suppliers such as Durham Animal Feeds stockists. This covers most of the muscle and bone in one go.
- Chicken carcasses or frames: £1.50 to £2.50 per kg. About 45 percent bone, so they are the cheap bone source.
- Chicken wings: £2.50 to £4 per kg in supermarkets.
- Beef or lamb mince: £4 to £6 per kg. Use for variety, not as the base.
- Liver and kidney: £2 to £4 per kg, and you only need 10 percent of the diet.
- Green tripe: £2.50 to £4 per kg from raw suppliers. Counts as muscle meat and most dogs love it.
- Frozen mixed vegetables (BARF only): £1 to £1.50 per kg.
A 20 kg dog on 500 g a day at a blended £3 per kg is £45 a month. The catch is freezer space (15 kg a month needs a chest freezer) and the time to portion. The BARF vs PMR guide explains the ratios to hit.
7 ways to pay less for raw
- Buy the big pack. Nutriment chicken is £4.49 per kg in the 1.4 kg tub and £5.98 per kg in the 500 g tub. Same food, 25 percent less.
- Use a local stockist, not delivery. Frozen delivery adds £5 to £10 an order. Independent pet shops with a raw freezer carry DAF, Nutriment and Natures Menu at shelf price.
- Mix a budget complete with a cheap bone source. Feed 80/10/10 complete mince most days and a chicken carcass as a meal once or twice a week.
- Feed 2 percent, not 3, if your dog is a healthy weight on lead walks. That alone cuts the bill by a third. Check with the feeding guide.
- Part raw. One raw meal, one kibble meal, in separate sittings. Halves the raw cost.
- Use subscription intro offers once. Bella + Duke and others run first box discounts. Take the offer, then compare the ongoing price per day with your local stockist before continuing.
- Buy a second hand chest freezer. A 200 litre freezer holds about 2 months of food for a 20 kg dog and lets you buy 15 kg boxes at the lowest price per kg.
Budget complete raw to compare
Durham Animal Feeds and Nutriment are the two lowest priced completes per kg in the table. Bella + Duke is the subscription option if you would rather have it portioned and delivered.

What not to cut
Do not save money by skipping organ meat or feeding bone-free mince long term. Liver and kidney supply vitamins A and D, copper and iron that muscle meat does not, and bone is the calcium source. Both are among the cheapest ingredients anyway. If you are buying "pet mince" from a butcher, ask what is in it: some is trimmings and fat with no bone, which is fine as muscle meat but not as a complete diet.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to feed raw in the UK?
Buying plain minces and carcasses from a raw supplier or local stockist and balancing it yourself. Expect £2.50 to £4.50 per kg, so £38 to £68 a month for a 20 kg dog. The cheapest ready balanced option found was Durham Animal Feeds at £4.38 per kg, checked 31 Oct 2026.
Is raw more expensive than kibble?
Usually yes, but less than people expect. A mid range dry food for a 20 kg dog costs £35 to £60 a month. Budget complete raw for the same dog is £66 to £120 a month. Premium kibble and fresh cooked subscriptions overlap with the top of that range.
Are subscription raw brands worth the extra?
You pay for portioning, recipe variety, delivery and not needing to visit a stockist. Bella + Duke works out at about £7.18 per kg against £4.38 for the cheapest shop block. For a dog under 10 kg the difference is £10 to £20 a month. For a 30 kg dog it is £60 or more a month, so the bigger the dog, the more buying in bulk pays.
Can I feed raw part time to save money?
Yes. Feeding raw for one meal and a good kibble for the other roughly halves the raw cost. Keep the two in separate meals, scale the raw portion to half the calculator result, and expect stools to be less consistent than on either diet alone.
